Just reaing about Brett Goode getting his bell rung. I never once have thought about a bad long snap on the Packers and that got me thinking about unsung roles on this team. Goode has been Great! I hope he's ready come Philly...

from JSO
"Goode knocked from game: A wrinkle was thrown in the punting competition when long-snapper Brett Goode was knocked out of the game with a blow to the head in the first quarter.

On the opening punt with 13:34 remaining, Goode took a hard hit from Chiefs linebacker Corey Greenwood. It took a moment for Goode to get off the turf and to a knee. When he tried to jog off, he was obviously wobbly and was immediately met by the Packers' medical staff.

Goode was allowed to snap on two more punts - he wasn't touched on either - before he was removed with what was announced to the press box as "a blow to the head."

According to the concussion guidelines put out by the NFL, it is suggested that players who appear disoriented not be allowed back into the game. It's a suggestion, not a rule.

"It's a doctor's evaluation," McCarthy said. "I know they got to him right away and then he was able to go, I think it was two more plays after that. And the doctors felt it was time for him to go. It's a cut-and-dry system. If it's a medical decision, they don't play. There's never any buts or whats."

I want to talk, for a moment, about our purple neighbors. I'll do it here because it's patently obvious that it's difficult/impossible to talk about them in their own forum.

No less an authority than the Daily Norseapple, SuperGonzo, has strongly asserted that the Vikings are the class of the division this year. He bases this on the fact that the Vikings won the division last year by a game and that they beat the Packers twice last season. Although I did try to remind him that things change from year to year, I couldn't shake him from his belief even an iota.

Their QB is a year older and coming off an injury that hampers his movement. He's missed most of training camp, again. His #1 receiver just had hip surgery; last year's ROY has missed most of camp with a series of migraines. The offensive line looks shaky at this point and Adrian Petersen is averaging less than 3 yards/carry in the second preseason game.

The secondary, which was among the league's worst last year, was sliced by Alex Smith (not really an elite QB) for 9 of 13 in a brief appearance.

Here's my prediction. Feel free to throw it back in my face if I'm totally wrong:

The Vikings are in for a tough year. I see them losing their opener on the road to the Saints to start the season at 0-1. Favre and Harvin both are hampered by injuries. Petersen isn't finding holes and gets frustrated; every fumble will bring increased scrutiny on that aspect of his game.

Their next four games are at home against Miami and the Lions and I'd expect that they'll win those two. Then they travel to NJ and return home against Dallas. If the Vikings don't win 3 out of 4 here then they're in trouble.

Then they come to Green Bay. The Packers at this point could easily be 5-1 and a win over the Vikings would put them two games back and then the Vikings would have to travel to New England. So if the Packers can prevail at home against Minnesota on October 24 the Vikings are looking at a season where they are a .500 team and a couple of games out of first halfway through the season.

Then, of course, you have the Favre fade factor coming into play in the second half of the season and so even though the second half of their schedule could see them go 6-2 I think it's more likely that Favre'll throw at least one win away and it'll be more like 5-3 for a 9-7 finish.....not quite good enough.

So there. I've flat said it. Vikings go 9-7 and fail to make the playoffs. Throw it back in my face at the end of the year if I'm wrong.

....after getting to see our defense play in two preseason games now, some observations:

1) Without 5 of our 8 starting LB's & DB's playing last night it was tough to asess if we made any progress from last week

2) We may have to get pressure through our blitz schemes because it doesn't look we are going to win many one-on-one pass rushes with our D-lineman

3) Underwood & Lee don't look great in coverage & will be taken advantage of in nickel & dime situations.

4) Jolly was better at DE than Pickett.

...all in all I don't see much significant improvement from last year which means look for high scoring games vs. the better QB's.

He and Cullen Jenkins appear to be the two d-linemen who will play in both the base and the nickel package which means they will be on the field for most of the defensive snaps. Raji didn’t look all that great against the Browns. I hope he steps it up and shows something more against Seattle in the second pre-season game. I know it’s “just the pre-season” but it would be nice to see Raji push somebody around instead of getting pushed around. I will be keeping my eye on him against the Seahawks.
What does everyone else think about Raji as he enters his second year for us?

Mike Holmgren of course, is the Browns' God of All Things Football now, trying to turn the organization around.

You know, it may just be my impression, but living in Packerland...I've got to ask... Does anyone else feel that Holmgren has become something of an afterthought in PackersNation? Chris Havel and Harry Sydney were discussing this very topic in this afternoon's radio show and I got to thinking: "Jeez, you know, it's somewhat true. The guy DID bring another NFL Championship to Green Bay and he doesn't seem to get the adoration that he used to."

Thoughts?
